The 2024 Cofield Sangiovese is bright, juicy, and beautifully expressive, capturing the essence of our Wahgunyah vineyard with vibrant red fruit, floral notes, and a savory, earthy edge. Its aromas are dominated by red cherry and cranberry, complemented by subtle violet and rose petal florals, hints of dried herbs, and a touch of dusty earth or terra cotta, reflecting both the grape and the warm climate.

On the palate, the wine is light-bodied with fresh acidity and low to medium tannins, showcasing juicy red fruits like sour cherry and wild strawberry alongside a savory edge. Minimal oak influence allows the fruit and regional character to shine. Sourced from our Quartz Vein vineyard with two Sangiovese clones (Brunello and Mat 6), the grapes were carefully handled to enhance concentration and freshness, with fermentation promoting red fruit characters and 12 months of maturation in 2nd and 3rd passage French oak barrels adding subtle complexity.

This classic Italian variety, most notable in the famous wines of Tuscany, has also found a happy home in North East Victoria. We source the fruit from our own Quartz Vein vineyard at Wahgunyah. The grapes were sourced from our cellar door block next to the winery and are of two different Sangiovese clones (Brunello and Mat 6), these two clones complement each other nicely. Mat 6 has smaller berries and bunches and a slightly lower crop load which brings concentration while the Brunello clone’s thick skin is very suited to the warm climate and more disease resistant in wetter years. During fermentation the must received plenty of oxygen to promote red fruit characters, the wine was pressed off shortly after fermentation to preserve freshness, vibrancy and primary fruit aromas. Aged for 12 months in 2nd and 3rd passage French oak barrels.
