2022 Provincial Black Netherby Shiraz

Netherby represents the finest parcel of single-vineyard shiraz made each year. It certainly lives large in personality, flavour and presence. Ripe, black fruits and woodsy spices to the fore, strong and potent, with layers of cacao, star anise, licorice, earth and sandalwood. On the one hand this is dense and heavy and on the other it’s well tamed and kempt. Tar, toast, roasted herbs and meats, blackberry and scorched plum flavours come with overtones of cloves. It’s a gutsy red but it’s smooth-skinned. Tannin, which applies a fair clamp, also feels fine-grained and finessed. The merest whisper of vanilla lends the palate a gentle creaminess, which is a nice finishing touch on what is a very good wine overall. ~ Campbell Mattinson, Winefront
