Provincial Black

“Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.” ― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

The quote is not only relevant to rivers, but to winemakers as well. To say winemakers need to be patient is a huge understatement, but it is definitely worth the wait.

It can take quite a long time to make a great wine, and that requires a lot of patience. From planting the vines, to the first bud break, to harvest, to barrel aging and blending process and then into the bottle. This process has already taken up to 4 years. Then there is the time in the bottle – this can take a further 4 years depending on the wine.

Since the mid 2000’s, I have had a vision to further showcase the local wine region by creating a range of premium single-vineyard wines. I want to make wines that genuinely demonstrate the variety, appellation, and site they come from.

After a lot of waiting, and a lot of trials, I am thrilled to finally be able to release 4 premium wines in our new Provincial Black range.

2008 Vintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay

This wine started its life as a trial batch I was working on with my father Max a couple of years earlier. Whilst none of those micro batches ended up seeing the light of day, they did give us confidence to proceed with this style in 2008 where conditions where more favourable to the opulent yet elegant style we are seeking. Crafted from premium fruit grown in nearby King valley, this wine has had 10 years aging on yeast lees in the bottle prior to disgorging giving the wine great depth and complexity.

2017 Chardonnay

Dad, Max, lived in Myrtleford during the 1950’s and 60’s and grew an immense respect for the Alpine region.

When he then started Cofield Wines in the 1990’s, Max took a keen interest in the emerging viticulture of the Alpine Valley’s. Max was able to experiment with the grapes of the region to make small batches of wine to the highest quality that he strove to achieve.

I have since continued this connection with the Alpine Valley region, cherry picking from the best vineyards for this wine.

2018 Netherby Shiraz

Our Netherby vineyard sits upon what was Graham brothers Netherby Estate, first planted in 1859. At its height of production, the vineyard stretched over more than 550 acres, prior to closure in 1960. We think it fitting that our premium Shiraz, grown on the same deep Rutherglen loam, acknowledges the 101 years that wine flowed in the Netherby cellars.

This wine represents our finest parcelof single vineyardShiraz. Hand-crafted in tiny volumes, we employ traditional methods to produce a wine of immense depth and intensity.

2018 Quartz Vein Durif

Our home vineyard sits upon a complex patch of soil. Light sands rise from the Murray River and meandering Sunday Creek to the west, while darker red and brown loams stretch east toward Rutherglen. They meet beneath us, separated only by a thin vein of quartz, that imparts unique character on the resulting wines.

From a mature planting, this wine represents our finest parcel of estate grown Durif. Hand-crafted in tiny volumes, we employ traditional methods to produce a wine of immense depth and complexity.

Some wine club members, family, friends and visitors to our events will have heard me discussing this project over the years, soafter a lot of waiting, and a lot of trials, I am thrilled to finally be able to release 4 premium wines in our new Provincial Black range.
